Students in the English 102/Composition II Honors class at Spoon River College are holding a school supply drive on Monday, May 4 from 8am-Noon. The students are calling the event "All Children Deserve Crayons" or "AC/DC" and are inviting SRC students, staff, and community members to participate by either donating school supplies or making a monetary donation to go toward the purchase of items. Those individuals participating will receive a free, lemon shake-up beverage.

In addition to the regular coursework for the class, the students came up with various service-learning projects for the semester. The theme for the class has been leadership and the qualities of good leaders.

"One of our points of discussion was that good leaders enable others by giving them the tools they need to be successful," said Spoon River College English instructor Donna Smith. "The students came up with the idea of encouraging students in grade schools to do well in school and decided to hold a school supply drive."

Suggested donations include: pencils, folders, binders, notebooks, loose leaf paper, pens and, of course, crayons. All of the donated supplies will be given to local schools, added Smith. The donation drop-off location will be the front of the Centers building on the Canton campus.
