Students will compete in an Olympic-themed athletic competition when Third Street Elementary School, in partnership with The Grove, hosts its 2nd annual Olympic Games on Saturday, May 2 at the school's 201 South June Street campus. From 10a.m. to 1p.m. students in grades K-5 gain admission to the event by donating backpacks filled with new school supplies purchased at their own expense, which will later be distributed to homeless kids in Los Angeles by "School on Wheels," a tutoring service for the underprivileged.

"The Grove is proud and privileged to support the students at Third Street Elementary as they learn both the satisfaction and value of putting the needs of others first, an excellent way to help build character among our leaders of tomorrow," said Rick Lemmo, Senior Vice President of Community Relations at The Grove.

In addition to support from The Grove, the Tiger Woods Foundation awarded Third Street Elementary a $2,500 grant in an effort to help the students meet their fundraising goal for this year's event--1,200 backpacks filled with school supplies and $12,000 raised for some of the school's key programs.

"More than 14,000 children in Los Angeles are homeless and the average age is nine," says Dr. Suzie Oh, principal of Third Street Elementary. "The students and families at our school want to help."

More than 400 students participated in the 2008 Third Street Olympic Games which resulted in 814 backpacks filled with new school supplies valued at over $28,000, donated to local homeless children and thousands of dollars raised for art, technology and cultural programs at Third Street Elementary.
