LSI Invests in Global Education With 2009 Backpack Program

LSI Corporation (NYSE: LSI) announced that it has begun to provide backpacks and school supplies to approximately 12,000 underprivileged students around the world as part of a continuing company program to improve K-12 education in communities where its employees live and work.

In 2008, LSI contributed more than 9,000 backpacks to primary and secondary schools in Asia, Europe and the United States. The 2009 program was kicked off in India and the United Kingdom in mid-July and will extend to LSI communities including Allentown, Pa., Norcross, Ga., Wichita, Kan. and school districts in a number of cities in Colorado and Northern California by summer's end.

"As a U.S.-based company that operates globally, LSI understands that investment in local education is an investment in a better world," said Abhi Talwalkar, LSI president and chief executive officer. "In these uncertain economic times, it's as important as ever to assist schools and families in making sure that students have the necessary means to achieve academic success, and I'm proud of the generosity and commitment shown by our employees to help make this a reality."

Volunteer employees identify local schools in need of supplies, and then LSI provides the backpacks, which are filled with grade-appropriate supplies donated by employees, such as notebooks, pens, calculators and dictionaries.

"In an era of ever-tightening budgets, material contributions from companies such as LSI make a huge difference to us and our students," said Cyndi Gile, Volunteer Coordinator, Poudre School District, Fort Collins, Colo. "We very much appreciate their continued support."

The student backpack program is one component of the LSI Philanthropy and Community Enhancement (PACE) initiative. The long-range goal of the PACE program is to enrich education in math and sciences for grades K-12 and their equivalents around the globe.
