National Cable & Telecommunications Association; "CableCares" for 2009 to Benefit DC Schools and Charities

The National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) today called for volunteers to assist in the cable industry's 2009 "CableCares" community service initiative to help improve Washington, DC schools and assist local charities.

A variety of CableCares community service events are planned to coincide with The Cable Show '09, NCTA's 58th Annual Convention and International Exposition which will be held at the Washington Convention Center, April 1-3, 2009.

"The District of Columbia supports initiatives that give back to the community," Washington, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty said. "We share the commitment of CableCares to provide valuable resources for our school children and uplift our most vulnerable community members."

Build a Media Center and Spruce Up the Truesdell Education Campus with Comcast and City Year CableCares, Comcast and non-profit City Year will partner to build a new media center for the students at the Truesdell Education Campus, a pre-K through 7th grade public school. CableCares volunteers are also needed to spend the morning of Wednesday, April 1, cleaning, painting and sprucing up the campus on Ingraham Street, NW. Make the Charles Hart Middle School More Musical with Gospel Angels Gospel Music Channel will team again this year with CableCares, Feed the Children and its affiliates to bring school supplies and musical instruments to school students, this time in Washington, DC. Gospel Music Channel and cable volunteers will distribute food and school supplies at Charles Hart Middle School located in the Anacostia neighborhood of the city. Gospel Music Channel also plans to donate musical instruments to the schools most in need across the entire District public school system. Stock the Shelves of DC School Libraries: CableCares also needs participants for its industry-wide, two-pronged effort to provide new books and educational videos for Washington, DC school libraries. Bring It: Cable Show delegates are invited to bring a new copy of an elementary or middle school level book to the Cable Show and drop it off at the CableCares Booth #3201 on the exhibit floor. NCTA's partners at Cable in the Classroom, Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT), the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC), The Cable Center and The Walter Kaitz Foundation will collect books at the booth throughout the show and arrange for delivery to the schools. All books for donation will be offered at a 25% discount. Join the Sportsman Channel to Feed the Homeless: Sportsman Channel will host its successful Hunt.Fish.Feed program at the Central Union Mission, in downtown Washington, DC. Working in partnership with Safari Club International, Sportsman Channel organizers and CableCares volunteers are needed to serve more than 200 hot lunches on Tuesday, March 31.

To further extend their reach to feed the needy, Sportsman Channel also has partnered with The Capital Area Food Bank, the largest, public non-profit hunger and nutrition education resource in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. The Capital Area Food Bank and The Sportsman Channel will be collecting canned foods and cash donations at a collection site located in the registration area. Donate Clothing with the Fine Living Network: Scripps Networks' Fine Living Network has partnered with Dress for Success and Career Gear, two non-profit organizations providing professional clothing, mentoring support, and career skills to men and women making the transition from government assistance to the workforce. CableCares and Fine Living Network are asking all attendees to The Cable Show to donate gently-used professional clothing and accessories in the Fine Living Network collection bin that will be located on-site at registration. Volunteer with Cable Positive: Cable Positive, the cable industry's AIDS action organization, will offer assistance to two well known Washington organizations, Metro TeenAIDS and Food and Friends. At Metro TeenAIDS volunteers will help renovate the center's basement and lend much needed administrative support. At Food and Friends, a non-profit kitchen and pantry service for homebound patients suffering from life threatening illnesses, volunteers are needed to help prepare, package and deliver meals to chronically ill, homebound individuals. Room to Care: With the generous support of The Cable Channel's Steve Nelson and the local Washington, DC hotel community, The Cable Channel is donating $1 for every room carrying The Cable Channel -- the in-room video news magazine service focusing on Show coverage and cable issues -- during The Cable Show '09. Thousands of dollars will be raised and donated to CableCares initiatives supporting Washington, DC school children.
