School officials are scrambling to understand how an intruder apparently walked through the front door of an elementary school Tuesday morning -- avoiding state-of-the-art security -- and leaving unimpeded with a cartful of school supplies.
Carlene Booker, 29, of Railroad Avenue, was arrested Wednesday at her home, but by that time police said the more than $700 in school supplies was gone. The goods were allegedly sold by Booker for $25 to buy drugs.
Booker was charged with second-degree larceny, and released after posting $2,500 bond.
School officials said Thursday they were aware of the incident, including Booker's arrest, but would not comment on how she might have gained entry about 9 a.m. Tuesday into Cesar Batalla School at Howard Avenue and State Street.
School district spokeswoman Veronica Douglas-Givens said Booker's intrusion is under investigation by school security officials and police.
Batalla School has a buzzer system on the front door for visitors, as well as surveillance cameras.
Police said Booker was seen by a school aide wandering around the West Side school and looking into classrooms. The aide had left the supplies, as well as a bag of children's clothing that she had purchased and her purse, in a vacant classroom, police said.
The aide told Booker to remain where she found her, and then went to tell other school officials. While she was gone, police said, Booker went into the classroom
and began loading the supplies and the clothing bag onto a hand cart. Then she maneuvered the cart out of the school through a side door.
Police said they viewed a surveillance video of the classroom as Booker allegedly loaded up the cart with the supplies. They said they also saw her rummaging through the aide's purse and tossing it on the floor. The video showed her pushing the loaded cart out the door.
When police later confronted Booker at her home, she allegedly admitted stealing the supplies and told them she had sold the material for $25 to buy drugs.
