YRMC kicks off drive for school supplies
YRMC is asking the community to donate school supplies, especially backpacks, for students and families hurting in the economic recession.
"With the economy the way it is this year we know the need is going to be higher," said Shay Andres, community relations specialist with YRMC.
Andres said YRMC this year has seen its largest- ever donation request -- 2,600 backpacks -- from local schools and nonprofit groups. Last year the collection goal, based on area needs, was just 1,000 backpacks.
"We really hope the community will pitch in," Andres said.
Over 60 organizations, including area schools, receive the supplies each year. Officials with each recipient organization are allowed to determine how to appropriately distribute the school supplies.
Donations will be collected in boxes at all the main entrances to YRMC, located at 2400 S. Avenue A, and at Yuma Regional Corporate Center, 399 W. 32nd St. Boxes are also currently located at Women's Health Specialists, 1030 W. 24th St., and at KCFY Radio, 1921 S. Rail Ave. #A.
Cash donations can be made through the Foundation of YRMC, and all money will go towards school supplies. Andres said that YRMC works with local stores to purchase items in bulk with the money donations, which she also said are tax deductible.
Volunteers are welcome to pack and deliver the supplies beginning at the end of July. People interested in volunteering can call Andres at 336-7595.
