On my mind
Do you remember what you wore on your first-ever day of school? While I seem to have difficulty remembering the essentials of everyday life (it took months to learn my husband's cell phone number, for example -- you, too? See page 63), I have a picture-perfect memory of my first-day-of-first-grade dress, complete with new red tennis shoes. That wonderful back-to-school crispness that comes with the clothes, the notebooks, the filler paper, the pencils, is what really signals the new school year. If you're still making the annual August pilgrimage to the mall, check out The Goods this month: GHRI has tested back-to-school fare, from sneakers and kids' clothes to thermal bottles and even online homework helpers. Find out which brands deliver the best values over the long haul by flipping to page 119.
A whole different education begins once we're out of school, and some of my most valuable postbaccalaureate learning has come from the advice I've received from other women: coworkers, friends, moms -- and from some of you, when you've written to me about your struggles and triumphs. That's why I love this month's Good Advice story, "Words to Chill By" (page 127). This little package of riches, gleaned from women across the country, is the hard-earned wisdom they use to keep themselves on track when they hit a bump. Think of it as a textbook for real life.
And now, some simple arithmetic: What would you do with $100,000? Go to Paris, pay off debts, fund your retirement, trade up to that house you've driven by for years and dreamed of moving into? You may get your chance: We're giving away $100,000 to one lucky reader, no strings attached. Find out more (and enter!) at win100k.goodhousekeeping.com.
If you're feeling creative, there's another big opportunity this month: Good Housekeeping's short story contest (page 169). To celebrate our upcoming 125th anniversary, we're inviting you to write a story about women's lives today. With our guest judge, best-selling novelist Jodi Picoult, we'll choose three winners, and are planning to publish their stories next year in the pages of Good Housekeeping. The grand prize is $3,000; two runners-up will each receive $750. Consider it the ultimate A in English.
